The Arrival of the New Chairman of NIBM - Mr Rohan Prithiviraj Perera

Mr Rohan Prithiviraj Perera was newly appointed as the Chairman of NIBM on the 11th of June 2018.


He is a  Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Sri Lanka, Rohan Prithiviraj Perera had his primary and secondary education at St Joseph's College, Colombo 10.


In his professional career, he served in Senior Managerial Positions at Unilever Limited, Sri Lanka and Pang Industries S A, Paris France, before joining the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) at its Paris Headquarters in France, He commenced his UN career in the Bureau of the Budget, assisting in preparing and monitoring  the global budgets of UNESCO and thereafter as the Administrator of the UNESCO's House Magazine, the "UNESCO Courier". Subsequently, he was assigned as Administrator to the UNESCO's Regional office in New Delhi, India, which office was responsible for programs in Bhutan, India, Maldives and Sri Lanka. He also handled the Cultural Heritage portfolio at the UNESCO New Delhi Office. He had the unique distinction and privilege of working together with the Indian Government authorities on behalf of UNESCO in the Nomination of "Bodhgaya" and the "Darjeeling Himalayan Railways" as UNESCO's World Heritage. He was the officer responsible for the UNESCO/ Ford Foundation project on the "Capacity Building of the Jaffna Library" in Sri Lanka during the war period.  He was also the Central Focal Point for the UNESCO New Delhi Office under the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) for interactions of the UN country team with the Planning Commission of the Government of India, which team provided inputs for the preparation of the 10th Five Year Plan of the Government of India.


Following a very satisfying career in the International Civil Services spanning over 26 Years and on his retirement, he was appointed the Secretary General of the Sri Lanka National Commission for UNESCO, which is the Central Focal Point for all UNESCO programs in the country. During his tenure, he assisted the Ministry of Environment and the Government of Sri Lanka authorities in the successful nomination of the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka as UNESCO's World Natural Heritage. He was also involved in the conceptualization of the "South Asian Centre for Teacher Development" which gained UNESCOs recognition as a Regional Hub for Teacher Development for the South Asian region.  He was closely involved on behalf of UNESCO in the launch of the "Education for Peace and Sustainable Development" initiative in Sri Lanka, post war.


Presently, he serves on the Governing Council of the University of Kelaniya, is the Chair of its Audit Committee and a Member of the Quality Assurance Committee. He is also a Member of the Board of Management of the South Asian Centre for Teacher Development in Meepe, Sri Lanka and a Standing Committee Member on the General System of Education in the National Education Commission of Sri Lanka.


A keen sports enthusiast, Mr Prithiviraj Perera is a Founding Member and President of the National Association for Canoeing and Kayaking, Sri Lanka, (NACKSL), an affiliate of the International Canoe Federation. Together with the support of other founding members, he has had the distinction of introducing a new competitive Olympic Sport to the country, which has grown from a zero base to having diverse disciplines, Canoe Sprints Para Canoes, Dragon Boats and Ocean Kayaking.
